The trailer for the upcoming documentary, ‘First Position’. The documentary follows young dancers competing in a ballet competition. I have never been, and I will never be a competitive dancer. I grew up dancing with a ballet company, and now, in college I have become more focused on modern dance. The contrast between the dance I did throughout my childhood and the dance I do now is really interesting to me. Ballet is so focused on how a dancer looks, and achieving perfection. Being a performance art, all dance is focused on how the dancer looks, but in ballet there is a right way to look and a wrong way. Now that I am focusing on modern dance, I feel that I am dancing more for myself. I am more focused on what my body needs, and my perception of myself as a dancer has changed, I feel freer. In modern dance, not every movement has to be perfect and beautiful. I’m not afraid to be ugly in my movement if that’s what is called for. I have come so far as a dancer in just four short years.
